Elizabeth blackwell was born in England in 1821, and emigrated to New York City when she was ten years old. One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. That was nearly impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century. After writing many letters seeking admission to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a doctor in Philadelphia. So determined was she, that she taught school and gave music lessons to earn many for her tuition.
In 1849, after graduation from medical school, she decided to further her education in Paris. She wanted to be a surgeon, but a serious eye infection forced her to abandon the idea.
Upon returning to the United States, she found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman. According to reports from Bureau of Statistics, 1992, about two and a half million children between ten to fifteen, are in the work force. These children are employed in factories and the informal sectors of the Indonesian economy. Along the streets of Jakarta, we can easily see these children shining shoes, selling cigarettes and toys or carrying shopping bags for ladies. They are willing to do many kinds of menial jobs, except begging for money.
With regard to this social phenomenon, a group of ladies collect funds to help these children. Mrs. Ahmad and Mrs. Amin together with friends from the mosque are now funding fifteen children to attend Junior High School. These donators are willing to assist children from all parts of Indonesia regardless of their sex, ethnic group, and religion. As to the caring of these children, the donators leave these aspects to the parents. They only take care of problems pertaining to funding the education of these children. They believe that parents are the best people to nurture their own children.
We hope and pray that there will be more and more affluent people who will help because of their sense of responsibility to the younger generations.
