“Drowned” Without Harm
The rescue workers dragged the body of a young man from the frozen pond where he had been trapped in a submerged car for 38 minutes. Knowing that a person usually cannot live without air for even a few minutes, the workers were sure that the young man was dead. When he suddenly gasped far the air, everyone was surprised. In only two weeks the young man was back in college.
A doctor who has studied several such cases of “cold water drowning” said that the young man was saved by a combination of the cold water and the “diving reflex”. It happens whenever a person plunges into water. At that, instant the heartbeat slows down. The blood, which carries oxygen to all parts of the body is kept from going  to those body parts that can live without blood for a short time. In this way blood is saved and sent first to the heart and brain,  which are in the greatest need of oxygen.
